Walkabout Entertainment for Streets, Sites and Festivals

Roaming entertainment brings a performance to the audience rather than asking everyone to gather at one fixed point. It can help enliven routes, waiting areas and open sites where a formal stage is not the right fit.

What can a roaming performance add?

Walkabout acts may include visual characters, street theatre, circus performers, puppets, bubbles and other forms of close-up interaction. The style and level of audience participation differ by performer, so describe the tone you want and ask how an act works with different ages and crowd sizes.

This format can suit town-centre events, festivals, community celebrations and family days. It can connect separate parts of a programme, add moments of surprise and engage people who are passing through rather than seated for a show.

Plan routes, pauses and audience access

Agree the route, performance duration, breaks and meeting point with the supplier. Check that the performer can move without blocking accessible paths, trading areas, emergency routes or other programmed activity. A quieter alternative route may be useful where the site has narrow sections or busy pinch points.

Ask how the act handles an audience gathering around them, whether they need a nearby base, and what happens in poor weather. For public-realm events, coordinate the plan with stewards and any venue or council requirements.

  • Mark a route that avoids queues and keeps entrances clear.
  • Decide how stewards will support safe movement and crowd dispersal.
  • Confirm sound, costume or equipment needs and any limits on the performance area.

Set the right tone for the setting

Describe the atmosphere you want, not just the name of an act. A gentle visual character may suit a busy shopping street differently from a high-energy circus performance; the supplier can explain their own style, interaction and movement. Tell them whether the event is family-focused, formal, seasonal or part of a longer festival programme, and flag any nearby activity that could affect the performance.

Plan for a mixed audience. Some visitors may want to watch from a little distance rather than take part, and others may need more room to move through the area. A clear route and a manageable stopping point help avoid turning a roaming act into an unexpected obstruction. Agree with the performer how they and event staff can respond if a crowd grows, the route becomes busy or a planned location is no longer available. If the event has a quieter zone or specific access arrangements, explain these in advance and ask what the act can accommodate. Confirm whether the performance is intended to be continuous or delivered in defined sets, and schedule breaks so the event team knows when and where the performer will be available.
